the Big Lebowski

the

STORY

For the past four years, I’ve had the awesome opportunity to participate in an event known as The Bigger Picture Show. This alternative movie poster gallery is hosted by LODGE DESIGN in collaboration with the Indy Film Fest, to support filmmakers and the amazing motion pictures that they create. I would highly recommend that if you live nearby and can make the show, you will not be disappointed! Each year more and more artists are invited to participate and the work created is phenomenal!

Each year the show has a theme or prompt to help give the artist some direction and for the 2023 show, the theme was Lucky Number 13. An incredibly fun list of films for all of us to choose from, each one showcasing something “unlucky” that happens either in the main story or to the main characters. I of course picked my absolute favorite film, the Big Lebowski and challenged myself to try and do something out of my comfort zone when it came to the style and design of the poster.

SKETCHES

the

PROCESS

I ended up choosing the 2nd concept sketch with the characters being seen through the opening of the bowling ball as it’s polished by the character Jesus – I felt like this particular scene captured so much of the film and its protagonists. As I started to sketch this concept out further, I noticed a problem, I didn’t like the angle of the characters in that particular scene, so I hunted down some other shots of each character and mashed them together into this final composition. Since everything I typically create is in Procreate, I have to piece the finished poster together with multiple files/drawings. Here’s a quick process of the piece of the main characters being drawn.
